This week we take you to visit a magical place, an emblematic monument of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park : The castle of Baux de Provence.
Built balancing on a spectacular rocky crag Le village des Baux de Provence, is known for being one of the most beautiful villages of France, in the heart of the Alpilles, this village outside of time is overlooked by an imposing medieval fortress which, in the Middle-ages, dominated 79 cities and villages around it..
The village has always attracted artists, from the painter Mario Prassinos, the engraver Louis Jou or Jean Cocteau who made his film “The Testament of Orpheus”
The commune has a rich historic and cultural heritage (the commune counts no less than 22 classified historical monuments), but it is also the products of the terroir which make its reputation. The village is surrounded by thousands of hectares of vineyards and olive groves. Its olive oil A.O.P Vallée des Baux-de-Provence, and its wines A.O.C Coteaux-des-Baux-de-Provence, enjoy an international reputation for their taste.
Overlooking the village, the impressive remnants of the Castle of Baux de Provence testify to a time when the Prices of Les Baux still controlled Provence.
Magical site, outside of time, the fortress offers a breathtaking view of the whole region.
One can only imagine what life was like during its golden age, which is the reason that the commune and passionate people work each year to revive the castle, just like in the grand old days.
This year, the Estivales des Baux will take place from April 1st till August 31, 2017, on week-ends, holidays and school vacation.
Additional events will take place for the Ascension and Pentecost holidays.
Without forgetting the not to be missed crossbow shooting, armament and catapult, shooting and duels.
At 11:00, 2:30 and 4:30 discover the history of a medieval siege and arm the largest trebuchet of France. In the afternoon you are invited to measure your skill in a crossbow shoot by impersonation a Middle-Age archer.
