THE MARKET OF ARLES

 

This week we take you to lose yourself in the colorful alleys of the market of Arles at the gates of the Camargue Natural Regional Park.

Arles is an old Roman city, located in the Département of Bouches du Rhône, at the gates of the Camargue Natural Regional Park .

Nicknamed the little RomeArles has a cultural and historical heritage which makes it a unique city.

First Roman then French. Its architecture reflects its multicultural past. Many monuments, the most ancient, date back to antiquity and are still visited today.

Arles is a city of traditions, at the gates of the Camargue Natural  Regional Park, its terroir and its heritage are linked to its Natural Park.  It is to discover its market that we take you this week.

THE MARKET OF ARLES

If you go into the city of Arles on a Wednesday or a Saturday, you will by necessity discover its impressive market. The market of Arles.

The Saturday market is not only one of the biggest in France but also one of its most beautiful.

The Saturday market has 450 booths. It offers more than 2,5 kms of stands on the whole of the Boulevard des Lices and part of the Boulevards Georges-Clemenceau and Emile-Combes, as well as in Wilson Street.

The Wednesday market has 300 booths on the Boulevard Emile-Combes, from Place Lamartine to the Carrefour de la Croisiere.

Full of colors and scents, you will be carried away by the joyful agitation which reigns over the market.

You will discover products from the terroir and from artisans of Camargue, such as the Camargue organic rice, the Arles saucissons, as well as many regional product,  such as olive oil, honey, artisanal soaps, fruits and vegetables from Provence.

Right now the stalls are full of local strawberries.

In the spring you will find seasonal fruits and vegetables, eggplants, tomatoes, zucchinis, basil... You will also find cloths, clothing, shoes, meat, especially bull meat, fresh fish and crustaceans and highlighted are the Tellines (small local shellfish eaten with garlic and parsley as an aperitif).

If you like old furniture, beautiful books and knick-knacks of all types, the first Wednesday of the month the market holds its flea market on the Boulevard des Lices, occasions for searchers to find all types of treasures.
