La Saint-Valentin en amoureux en Provence
La Saint-Valentin en amoureux en Provence

Like every year, our shop windows are decked out in red and pink. Valentine’s Day in Provence is a very old festival.

Although some people today regard it as a purely commercial festival, its origins date back to the 3rd century AD. This festival is the origin of a beautiful story… that of Valentine, and his passion for love.

In France, Valentine’s Day is generally an opportunity to give flowers or chocolates, or to enjoy a romantic evening out, in a restaurant or even at the cinema, where romantic comedies take pride of place. Some cinemas even give away a packet of chocolate for the occasion.

Did you know? The origins of the patron saint of lovers: Valentines Day

Saint Valentine was a doctor who became a priest in the 3rd century.
He was imprisoned and sentenced to death around 270 AD by Emperor Claudius II for having performed several clandestine marriages.
The emperor had abolished marriage because, once married, some Christians refused to join the army in order to stay with their families.
But many young lovers continued to go to the Valentin priest to make their union official.
It is said that during his captivity, Valentin fell in love with his jailer’s daughter, a young blind woman, to whom he gave tree leaves in the shape of a heart with the inscription ‘from your Valentine’ before being executed.
He died a martyr in the name of love and marriage, and it was his life that was celebrated on the first Saint Valentine’s Day.
