THE MARKET OF L'ISLE-SUR-LA-SORGUE IN EARLY AUGUST: THE UNMISSABLE EVENT OF THE SUMMER.
Delicious treats are then stored on flat-bottomed boats, called Négo-Chins, and are offered to spectators by the boatmen who navigate them.
THE MARKET OF L'ISLE-SUR-LA-SORGUE, EARLY AUGUST, A TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL
This floating market was first created in the 1960s.
It came about after the visit of the Deputy Mayor of the town at the time to Thailand.
Amazed by the striking spectacle of the floating markets in Bangkok, he immediately thought of the fishermen from Isle-sur-la-Sorgue’s past!
These fishermen would descend from their cabins upstream of the village on Sundays to sell their products from their Négo-Chins!
He decided to recreate this scene!
Today, about a hundred beautifully decorated boats, led by merchants and their wives in traditional costumes, glide once a year from one bank to the other, offering enthusiasts a parade of colours and scents: local fruits and vegetables, cheeses, wines, honey, spices, breads, and bouquets of flowers…
When the floating market ends at 1 p.m., the Négo-Chins and market participants gather to sing the famous “Coupo Santo,” the Provençal anthem.
An emotional spectacle not to be missed!
