The Calanques National Park

Marseille’s calanques are one of Provence’s natural wonders. They are located on the Mediterranean coast.

They stretch for almost twenty kilometres, between Marseille and Cassis.

The National Park was created in 2012 to protect the unique biodiversity of these breathtaking landscapes.

A number of rare plant and animal species have made their home here.

These include Bonelli’s eagle and almost 83 protected plant species, spread over more than twenty-five creeks in all.

It’s one of the most remarkable sites in France, attracting around a million visitors from all over the world every year!

A calanque for everyone

Each of Marseille’s calanques has its own story and its own visitors. Below is a list of our recommendations for your visit:

  • The Calanque de Port Miou, a former stone quarry converted into a marina. It is one of the nearest creeks to Cassis and is much loved by visitors.
  • The Calanque de Port-Pin, easily accessible on foot from Cassis. It requires very little effort. It takes around 30 minutes to reach.
  • The Calanque d’En-Vau, a renowned rock-climbing area with breathtaking cliffs.
  • The Calanque de l’Å“il de verre is very difficult to get to. It is reserved for experienced hikers.
  • The Calanque de Sugiton, one of the easiest to get to, ideal for a family day out.
  • The Calanque de Morgiou, with its village and small port. It’s the perfect cove for a lazy day on the beach.
  • The Calanque de Sormiou, with its village and small harbour, boasts turquoise blue waters. It’s a delight for young and old alike.
  • The Calanque of Marseilleveyre, with its beach, bar-restaurant and diving centre.
