Where to stay in the Alpilles? Must-see villages
Here are our 3 favourite spots in the Alpilles for your next holidays. Discover our full article on the most beautiful villages in the Alpilles.
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Considered the undisputed capital of the Alpilles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence charms visitors with its plane-tree-lined boulevards and refined artisan boutiques. It was here that Vincent Van Gogh painted his most famous masterpieces.
Mouriès
Located on the southern slope of the massif, Mouriès is a characterful village that beats to the rhythm of local agriculture. The leading olive-growing commune in France, it is home to several mills where exceptional olive oils are pressed, protected by the AOP Huile d’olive de la Vallée des Baux-de-Provence.
Aureille
For those looking to get off the beaten track, Aureille is a peaceful stop nestled at the foot of limestone cliffs. This small village, dominated by the ruins of its medieval castle, has preserved its wild, tranquil character.
When is the best time to go on holidays in the Alpilles?
Our favourite time for holidays in the Alpilles: the months of June and September, for the perfect balance between ideal weather and reasonable crowds.
Spring: In the locals’ opinion, it’s the most beautiful season. Nature bursts into life, irises bloom, and temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities (between 18°C and 25°C). The bonus: fewer people at tourist sites like Les Baux-de-Provence.
Summer: This is peak season—holidays under a blazing sun and the deafening song of cicadas. Temperatures often exceed 30°C. Note: due to fire risks, access to the Alpilles forested massif is regulated and sometimes prohibited by prefectural decree.
Autumn: A season of mild weather and golden light. The heat eases (20°C to 25°C), but the sea and pools are still pleasant. It’s harvest season for grapes and olives.
Winter: While the Mistral can be biting, the sky remains a deep blue. For a truly authentic experience. This is the time for the 13 desserts, Provençal Christmas markets, and long meals by the fireplace.
