The Alpilles: a national jewel

The Parc des Alpilles has also been classified under NATURA 2000 to protect its biodiversity. The region is home to over a hundred rare and protected species, including the Bonelli eagle and the Grand-Duc.

The Alpilles massif is at the heart of a highly attractive tourist area. It is surrounded by the Parc de la Camargue and the Parc du Luberon.

It has two main sources of economic activity: agriculture (19%) and commercial services, including tourism (40%).

There are almost 2,000 farms in the 16 communes, more than half of which cover less than 5 hectares. Agriculture in the communes of the Alpilles can be divided into 2 groups: hill farming, where fields of vines, olive trees and hay flourish, and lowland farming, with market gardening.

The Alpilles region is an ideal place for all kinds of activities, including hiking, cycling or horse-riding, stopovers, golf, visits to wine estates and wine-tasting, and visits to historic sites such as Glanum or Les Baux de Provence…
