As a result, and despite the difficulties of operating them, the Bruoux Mines expanded: from 1880 to 1950, no fewer than <strong>40 kilometres<\/strong> of galleries were carved out of the cliff face with pickaxes. At the time, ochre was a thriving industry in the Luberon, with <strong>80% of production exported via the Port of Marseille to international destinations<\/strong>. Today, the end of industrial extraction has allowed the site to regenerate, and the Bruoux Mines\u2019 tourism development is part of an approach focused on preserving and passing on this unique heritage.   <\/p><p>Contrary to what you might imagine, the mines are not natural in origin.
