It was also built on the ruins of a 12th-century fortress; from 1526, when the castle was completed, Louis d&#8217;Agoult-Montauban and his wife, Blanche de L\u00e9vis-Ventadour, had a <g id=\"gid_3\">Renaissance wing<\/g> added to enlarge it. At the end of the 16<g id=\"gid_4\">th<\/g> century, the building became the property of the Cr\u00e9qui-Lesdigui\u00e8res, who resided at La Tour d&#8217;Aigues Castle, then until 1789, the castle was only occupied by stewards managing the surrounding lands. When Robert Laurent-Vibert decided to buy the ruin to rebuild it into a castle, he drove out these undesirable occupants. It is said that upon leaving, the Gypsies left behind a curse that would strike anyone who occupied Lourmarin Castle. It is said that this curse materialized in the form of strange graffiti carved on the castle walls, and some people who contributed to the castle&#8217;s rehabilitation met <g id=\"gid_1\">a tragic end<\/g>: suicides, but especially road accidents, were subsequently recorded.
