Summer in Provence is a season rich in cultural, artistic and gastronomic events. Whether you’re a lover of theatre, photography, classical music or gastronomy, the region offers festivals to awaken all your senses.
Festival d'Avignon (5-25 July)
The Festival d’Avignon, founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, is one of the most prestigious theatre and performing arts festivals in the world. Every summer, the city of the Popes becomes a veritable open-air theatre, bringing together artists and spectators from the four corners of the globe. For three weeks, more than 1,000 shows, ranging from classical theatre to contemporary creations, are presented in emblematic venues such as the Cour d’Honneur of the Palais des Papes, chapels, cloisters and even the city’s streets and squares.
The festival is divided into two parts: the ‘In’, which brings together the official shows, often major international productions, and the ‘Off’, a space of freedom for independent companies and young talent. Avignon in July is a unique experience, where every street corner exudes art and culture, creating an electrifying and festive atmosphere.
Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles (1 July - 22 September)
The Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles, founded in 1970 by Lucien Clergue, Michel Tournier and Jean-Maurice Rouquette, is a major event for photography enthusiasts. Every year, the festival offers exhibitions, screenings, workshops and conferences in a variety of historic and unusual locations in Arles, including churches, cloisters, industrial warehouses and galleries.
Les Rencontres d’Arles is renowned for its ability to discover and promote new talent, while paying tribute to the great masters of photography. It’s a unique opportunity to discover fascinating works, talk to artists and professionals from all over the world, and immerse yourself in the rich and diverse visual world of contemporary photography.
La Roque d'Anthéron Piano Festival (20 July - 18 August)
Since 1981, the La Roque d’Anthéron Piano Festival has become a not-to-be-missed event for music lovers and classical music enthusiasts. Nestling in the enchanting setting of the Parc du Château de Florans, the festival is renowned for the exceptional quality of its concerts and the beauty of its venues, which include parks, gardens, cloisters and churches.
Every summer, the festival welcomes the world’s greatest pianists as well as promising young talents. The eclectic and demanding programme includes recitals, chamber music concerts, jazz evenings and contemporary works. To attend a concert at La Roque d’Anthéron is to enjoy an unforgettable musical experience in an intimate, natural setting.
